Hate it or Love it, it’s “Engagement Season”

Denver Wedding DJ Engagement SeasonThe time between Thanksgiving & Valentines Day has come to be known as “Engagement Season.” Colorado wedding professionals advertise their services heavily during these couple months. Why? Well, over 40% of all engagements happen during these few weeks… Jewelers hit the media hard with engagement ring specials. Wedding vendors offer discounts on their services. And, the majority of Bridal Shows happen during this time. This also means many couples are starting their wedding planning process. This includes choosing a date, selecting a venue, booking your planner, photographer, caterer, DJ, florist, Officiant, etc.

We are often asked at what point in the wedding planning process you should book your DJ. We always answer “AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!” Over 90% of our Denver Wedding DJ business comes from word-of-mouth referrals. We are often book us over a year in advance of our couples’ wedding date, so prime wedding dates (the Saturdays between June & September) book FAST. Need help finding another vendor? Since we have been working with couples in the Denver & Colorado market for over 10 years, we have an awesome network of partners we can refer you to that we KNOW will do a great job.

Wedding Reception Timeline

Wedding Reception TimelineWhen planning your Colorado wedding reception, a lot of thought goes into the timeline. How long should cocktail hour last? When should you have the First Dance? When do the toasts happen? The wedding reception timeline serves as a road map for your wedding vendors so we can keep things moving along. If you are working with a wedding planner/coordinator (which we strongly recommend), they will plan out the order of events with you and make sure there are no “dragging” moments. As Denver Wedding DJs, we work hand-in-hand with your planner & other vendors to make sure we are all on the same page before we make any announcements. The timeline serves as our guide so we can keep guests informed on the important events, such as to when they should take their seats for the Grand Entrance. Our friends at The Knot recently posted an article about the Basic Wedding Reception Timeline and it covers a lot of the elements. Here is a link to the full article:
Basic Reception Timeline

Most of the receptions we DJ here in Colorado follow a slightly different order, though. Here is a basic rundown:

-Receiving Line (Haven’t seen this very often, but it’s popular in other parts of the country)
-Cocktail Hour (Usually lasts 1 hour while the couple & family are taking pictures)
-Grand Entrance of the Bride, Groom & Wedding Party
-Dinner
-Champagne Toast (Begins after the last table has their food – about 30 minutes after dinner starts)
-Cake Cutting (Immediately following toasts)
-First Dance/Father-Daughter Dance/Mother-Son Dance (Immediately following cake cutting)
-Open Dancing

Obviously, you can customize this order and timing to whatever you want. As the Master of Ceremonies, our job is to keep the flow moving smoothly and not have guests saying “Man, this is really dragging along.” So, we’ll all work together to put together a wedding reception timeline that makes sense and keeps everybody on track.

EVERYTHING You Need To Know About Colorado Weddings

Colorado Winter WeddingI read this exact heading from our friends at The Knot: “Everything You Need To Know About Getting Married In Colorado.” Needless to say, I was intrigued. How can ANY website claim to know everything about Colorado Weddings? After reading it, I realized it’s more of a general “tourist’s guide” rather than an in-depth look at everything our lovely state has to offer couples having Colorado weddings. They did touch on some good points though – including how to apply for a marriage license, how to change your name, and that you need to obtain a permit for National, State, & City Park venues like the Washington Park Boathouse. (They didn’t tell you HOW to obtain the permit, just that you need one). Overall, it was generic. Give it a read, though… they discuss planning around certain events such as the Dragon Boat Festival & Cherry Creek Arts Festival, things you can do & see if you’re an out-of-town guest, and that Colorado weddings do occur in all four seasons. You’ll also find links to their “Top Wedding Vendors” in Denver, Boulder, & Colorado Springs. (Shameless plug – We are one of the preferred Denver Wedding DJ companies listed on their site.) What is “Wedding Season”?

Vail Wedding CeremonyWedding Season is the phrase used to describe the months when most weddings occur in a given region. As Wedding DJs in Colorado, our peak “wedding season” is June through October, and December (as there are a lot of Holiday parties & corporate events to compete with). Why is this important? Well, we know many couples are trying to find ways to save money on their wedding. One of the easiest ways to save across the board is to pick a wedding date outside of wedding season. This is due to the basic laws of supply & demand. Most couples choose to have their weddings on Saturdays during the summer & fall months in Colorado in order to take advantage of the beautiful weather we have here. Those 20 Saturdays fill up fast… especially with the best vendors and the best venues. Therefore, you have to pay top dollar for the venue, photographer, caterer, Denver wedding DJ, florist, officiant, etc. Many Colorado couples have realized this and have chosen to have their weddings on a Friday or Sunday in an attempt to save a couple bucks. Unfortunately, this has caught on as a popular alternative and we have as many weddings to DJ on Fridays & Sundays as we do Saturdays. So much for saving money there.

However – all is not lost. There are still 6 months that are considered “off-peak” in which nearly all vendors offer lower pricing… especially when the wedding is NOT on a Saturday. Want a super-cheap amazing wedding with the best vendors in town? Get married on a Tuesday in February. If that doesn’t quite fit your vision of your wedding, consider any weekend from January through May. With all of the fantastic lighting & decor options available, we can help transform any indoor venue and make your dreams a reality.

We’re here to help, so just Contact Us and we’ll answer any questions you may have. We have a list of amazing vendors we know & trust and would be happy to connect you with them as well.

Wedding Cocktail & Dinner Music

Uplighting & Custom Gobo
Denver Wedding with Uplighting & Custom Gobo
When planning the music for your Colorado wedding, a lot of focus goes into the dancing… what will get people on the dance floor? Granted – this is very important. But what about the 2-3 hours before open dancing starts? When you hire us as your professional wedding DJ, we work with you to select the best songs that reflect your personality for cocktail & dinner music.

If you’re looking for a Nostalgic feel, artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, & Van Morrison are a great start. “Modern Nostalgic” is what we call the artists like Michael Buble, Steve Tyrell, & Ray LaMontagne. In lieu of having a String Quartet during cocktail hour, have your Denver Wedding DJ play some selections by the Vitamin String Quartet. Another great group is Postmodern Jukebox (jazz covers of popular & current Pop songs) – a great dinner music choice!

Maybe you don’t want “wedding music” during cocktail hour & dinner… great! Bluegrass, “Newgrass,” Classic Rock, Country, 90’s Love Songs, whatever your music tastes are. With the experience of one of the best Wedding DJs in Denver & all of Colorado, we’ll plan out your playlist with you. Then, we’ll know when to play which songs in order to keep the energy at an appropriate level… We don’t want everyone fist-pumping during their salad course, but we also don’t want them falling asleep in their plate.

So, when it comes to cocktail hour & dinner music, think outside the “wedding music” box if you want. Let’s get creative and really bring your personalities out through music. Your guests will appreciate the different styles they’re listening to.

P.S. – Ask us about our Music Video package. We have videos to nearly every song we play – even for your cocktail & dinner music. We can show these videos on HDTVs or a projector & screen to keep your guests visually entertained as well.
