When planning your Colorado wedding reception, your wedding DJ should ask you for your favorite songs. Often times, this comes in the form of “Must Play,” “Play if Possible,” and “Do Not Play” lists. (As Denver Wedding DJs, we named our lists “I Love These Songs,” “I Like These Songs Too,” and “Do Not Play.”) These lists are VERY important to your wedding DJ as they tell us what your tastes in music are. We then program the music by grouping your selections together in similar styles & tempo ranges, read your crowd to see what is working for them, and ultimately pack your dance floor.
But, how many songs should you give us? Let’s do some quick math… the average song is around 3-4 minutes long. (We’ll use 3 minutes to make the math easy.) 60 minutes in an hour, 3 minutes a song… 20 songs an hour MAX. If you give us 100 “Must Play” songs to play during your 2 hours of open dancing, we just can’t do it. We recommend 5-10 Must Plays and 10-15 Play if Possibles. That gives us a great snapshot of your musical tastes, while still giving us some freedom to use our experience at reading a crowd.
Our goal as professional wedding DJs is to play music for you… this is YOUR wedding, so we want to make sure we play music YOU want to hear. With that being said, if your goal is to have people dancing all night, pick music that your guests would dance to. We’re happy to offer suggestions and have plenty of tools to help with song selections. Below is a link to our Music page which features the Top 200 Most Requested songs, as well as the Top 100 from each decade going back to the 1950’s. We hope this helps.
